The Rotary Club of Mississauga-Meadowvale, in conjunction with the 5th Meadowvale Scout Troop, the Mississauga Girl Guide 283rd Running Unit, and student volunteers from Mount Carmel Secondary, Meadowvale Secondary and Thomas St. Middle School are happy to report that we were able to collect approximately 5000 lbs of food during our spring Food Drive in Support of Eden Community Food Bank on May 12, 2007.

This year's Food Drive added two new components: a cellphone recycling
drive and a collection of recyclable beer, liquor and wine bottles.  In
addition to the tremendous quantity of food that was collected, the
community donated some 100+ used cellphones for the Phones for Food
Campaign (a recycling initiative that converts used cellphones to food for
foodbanks in Canada) and empty bottles which filled an entire Purolator
Courier van which was refunded through the BagItBack initiative of the
Beer Store and the LCBO, and generated  over $700 from the return
deposits.   The proceeds of the event will help to support Eden Community
Food Bank's operations.  Eden Community Food Bank is a non-profit,
non-denominational organization that receives no government funding and
supports needy residents within 3 Mississauga postal codes, L5N and L5M
and L5L with help from its affiliate food bank, Mississauga's Food Path.

Eden Community Food Bank Director Donna Behmer was overjoyed to see the
tremendous support from the community and remarked how the food that was
collected would help the food bank clients through the tough summer months
when donations of canned and dry goods tends to drop off.

Spring Food Drive Coordinator and Rotarian Jason Sack was impressed with
the manner in which our volunteers came out in support of this project.

"It was great to see so many families, moms and dads with their children,
pitching in and getting behind this project in both the donation bag
drop-off and collection and sorting.  Without their dedicated support, and
the support of the community, we would never have been able to make this
endeavor the success that it was, and I would like to thank everyone who
contributed to making this community project the success it was this
year."
